Seminar on the "Role of Cultural Heritage in
Fostering Nationalism in Kenya."

Dear Friends, Colleagues & Peers:

Welcome to our on-site and on-line staff seminar on the on-going series themed: Histories of Contested Spaces, Expropriation, Governance and Postcolonial Modernity in Kenya this coming Thursday May 23rd, 2024, 2.30pm East African Time.

Our presenter will be Ms. Tabitha Ndogoto. She will be speaking on "Role of Cultural Heritage in Fostering Nationalism in Kenya." Ms. Ndogotho is PhD candidate in Archaeology, Department of History and Archaeology, University of Nairobi. She holds an MA in Archaeology from the same University. Her research interests revolve around themes of pre-history and cultural heritage conservation in Africa and Kenya in particular (See the eflier attached herewith).

In this presentation, Ms. Ndogoto examines the fairly intricate interface between Culture and Nationalism in an African setting. She contends that in Kenya cultural heritage plays a critical role in the promotion of nationalism in ways which somewhat elicit the pride of nationhood and its projection to the world ‘out there.’ In her view, cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, provide opportunities for strengthening national ideologies. The Moderator and Discussant of the session will be Mr. David Kyule, Department of History and Archaeology, University of Nairobi.

For PHYSICAL participants : University of Nairobi Towers, 4th Floor, Room MLT04.
