Decolonizing Heritage: History of World War I East African Campaign & Absence of African Agency
Dear Colleagues, friends & Pears:
Welcome to our on-site (physical) and on-line (virtual) staff seminar presentation this Thursday March 28th, 2024, at 2.30pm EAT. Our presenter will be Dr. David Neville Masika. He is going to speak on "Decolonizing Heritage: History of World War I [East African Campaign] & Absence of African Agency." Dr. Masika is a Lecturer in the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Nairobi. He holds a PhD in Conflict and Peace Studies from the same University. His research interests are on the political economy of wars, and global issues that affect world peace, among them terrorism. In this presentation, Dr. Masika will underline the loud absence of the African heritage in World War I. From the primary data he collected at the East African African Campaign war zone in Taita Taveta, he demonstrates that although Africans were active participants in the campaign, they are absent in the existing physical landmarks that tell the story of the war. He wonders why the absence? Masika suggests that such silences speak of not only imperial racism but also outright discrimination of the British policy towards its colonial subjects. He argues that there is a need to relook at colonial narratives in ways that not only decolonizes colonial historiography but also centres the much-needed Africa agency in the British Empire building. For details kindly see the e-flyer attached herewith. The Moderator and Discussant of this session will be Dr. Margaret Gachihi, Department of History & Archaeology, University of Nairobi. . For PHYSICAL participants : University of Nairobi Towers, 4th Floor, Room MLT04.
