The Asia-Africa Center (Director Kim Taekyoon) and the HK+ Mega Asia Research Group invited Steven Gruzd, Head of the Russia-Africa Project at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), to hold a cross-cluster workshop on African-Russian relations. The lecture focused on the relationship between Africa and Russia during the Russia-Ukraine war and presented a case study in South Africa, explaining the relationship between countries on the African continent and Russia. The lecture included Russia-Africa relations and background, trade status, Africa’s response to the Russia-Ukraine war, the economic impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, and Russia-South Africa relations. Russia did not have any real domination, such as the colonization of the African continent, except for Djibouti. The practical relationship between Russia and Africa was formed in the past when Southern Africa received money, weapons and training from the Soviet Union to become independent from the colonialism of the Western powers. Steven Gruzd suggested that African countries reacted differently to the Russia-Ukraine war, and it was confirmed that Africa is suffering from economic damage such as rising crude oil prices, fertilizer shortages, food shortages, and inflation. African countries take different positions in their relations with Russia, but many are friendly to Russia, Steven noted. Economic and diplomatic influence on continental conflicts, climate change, and COVID-19 were expected to play an important role in Russia-Africa relations, and the lecture concluded with a 40-minute question-and-answer session.<\/p>\n
