Andrew will be speaking to us on:  "All the Dictator’s Men: Elite Management and Loyalty in Moi’s Kenya."  He is a PhD Candidate in Political Science, University of California-Berkeley. He holds a Bachelor of Science in International Politics from Georgetown University. His research focuses on elite politics and regime decision-making in East Africa – Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania.

In this presentation, Mr. Wojtanik delves into the inner workings of the late President Moi’s government to understand why some ruling elites defected from KANU while others remained invariably loyal to the president and ruling party. He points to the role of personal relationships, shared histories, and common identities in shaping the calculus of political elites and explaining why many made what appears, at least in retrospect, political “mistakes”: some defected from KANU only to languish in political irrelevance, while others stuck with the ruling party even when went down in 2002.

The Moderator and Discussant of the session will be Prof. Adams Oloo, Department of Political Science and Public Administration, University of Nairobi.
